Ampliando nuestros conocimientos

Exposición de Keith J. Topping: “Peer Learning”

“Peer Learning can be defined as the acquisition of knowledge and skill through active helping and supporting among status equals or matched companions. It involves people from similar social groupings who are not professional teachers helping each other”In his conference, Keith Topping made some comments on important items we have to take into account and think about when dealing with PL.

He also give us some clues to bear in mind:
Contact Constellation
The size of the group can vary: one helper working with a group of peers, two or more helpers take a group together, in pairs (dyads)…AbilitySome projects operate on cross-ability basis and other on same ability. In the last one, the helper has superior mastery.

Role Continuity
There can be different types of roles: switching roles (Reciprocal Peer Learning) or fixed roles.

Time
PL can be developed in regular class time or outside the timetable (break time/lunchtime). However, we have to bear in mind that when PL is put in practice outside the timetable, some contact in class is already needed.

We can use both methods, because we have to remember that PL is a supplement to regular teaching; it doesn’t need to be a substitute.

Place
We can use different locations: within or outside school. If it’s outside school we have to think about a place for the participants to get together.Voluntary or CompulsorySome projects require participation or helpers self-select to participate. It’s better not to force and have a nice experience. Students will join later on.

Reinforcement
Extrinsic reinforcement (award of participation) can be given, because we don’t always find intrinsic motivation.

Model
We always have to remember that cognitions of participants have to be adapting to each other: Cognitive Co-construction.

This cycle promotes metacognition: from the implicit to the explicit
Context
We have to think of our students: special needs, immigrants, lots of boys or girls…Maybe we need help from another colleague or people from University, the Psychology Department… It is better not to do thing on your own.

Objectives
They must be defined in observable, operational and measurable terms, so we can introduce changes. We have to establish objects for helpers and helped in different domains: cognitive, metacognitive, attitudinal and motivational (affective).

Curriculum area
It can be applied to different areas: reading, thinking skills, writing, spelling, mathematics, science…

Participants
When dealing with participants we have to take into account different variables discussed above: structural and background factors, age, number of participants, contact constellation, ability, fixed roles or reciprocal…When we match them taking into account ability, we need to be careful with relationships. We shouldn’t accept them to choose their partners. It’s better for them to know better somebody who they don’t really know. We also have to think that some helpers can be absent; we have to re-combine those few who are left behind.

Helping Technique
There are many differences between techniques we can use:- Peer tutoring, modelling, monitoring or assessment, cooperative groups…-

“Packaged” Technique: paired reading, pause prompt praise (PPP), companion study…

- Drill and Practice vs Conceptual Challenging- Trouble shooting- Mutual GainBefore going to a specific technique, we should taught first the general helping skills: presentation, explanation, modelling, demonstration, prompting, checking, error identification, assessment, feedback and remediation.

We have to specify a procedure to correct mistakes. It doesn’t need to be complicated. Before students move on, we have to check that what they are doing is correct.

Contact
It must be fluent at the beginning, and then less monitoring is needed. It can be done with the whole class or rotating groups. The duration can be 20 to 30 minutes, 3 or 4 time a week. It shouldn’t last more than 1 semester.

Materials
They can be special or regular, from different sources… We must check if students have free access to them.

Training
Participants need to receive a training session; it’s better to carry this session with helpers and helped together. We can show a demonstration between teachers (experienced helper/video). It’s also needed a guided practise and constant feedback.

Process Monitoring
The best is having direct observation. FeedbackIt must be given to the helpers and the helped. If we have into account all these items when dealing with Peer Learning, we will have better results and we will increase our knowledge about the topic.
